Are you looking at setting up chooks at home and not quite sure how to tackle it? Do you have lots of questions and quite frankly are worried mostly about those pesky foxes and where to actually buy the chickens and how to house them?
Well, this workshop is for you, we will teach you all of the dos and don’ts of setting up a chicken coop, sourcing chickens and how to build a chicken coop for 2 or up to 12 chooks!

The day will start with Claire from The Good Life Farm Co – she will be educating you about the following:
• Setting up a coop
• Fox proofing
• Space and welfare standards
• Nesting boxes
• Council regulations
• Feeders, waters and Chicken nutrition
• Choosing a breed of chicken, where to source laying hens and how much to pay
• Chicken health, how to care for an unwell chicken, best resources to refer to
• And who to call if things don't go to plan.
• What to do with your eggs once they start arriving (so exciting)!!
• How store them correctly for your health or if you are giving them to family/neighbours.

We will be breaking for morning tea and lunch, care of Home Grown Food in Kyneton and Sidonia Beef sausages which is included in the price.

Now it’s time to get your hands dirty! Steve will be showing you how to build a chicken coop which you can replicate at home. This part of the afternoon will allow you to have a demonstration and hands on experience and give you the skills to make you feel confident to build your own chook ‘palace’ at home.

The Chicken coop is designed to be relatively straight forward to build with a minimum of technical know how. It is constructed from sturdy materials to ensure a long life exposed to the elements and to guard against predators.
Four sided timber frames covered in strong wire come together to form the walls around a nesting box and with multiple access points this makes egg collection, watering, feeding and cleaning easier.

At the end of the day you will be armed with all the information you need to set up a chicken coop, complete this over the next month or two and by spring you will be eating your own delicious free range eggs and have some lovely chics to go with it!
